Motivation

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening
That is translated through you into action,
And because there is only one of you in all of time
This expression is unique.
And if you block it,
It will never exist through any other medium,
And be lost.
The world will not have it.
It is not your business to determine how good it is,
Nor how valuable, or how it compares with other expressions.
It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly,
to stay open and aware to the urges that motivate you.”

Martha Graham

  1. Oh my God...this has to be the best quote I have ever read! And it so applies to my week last week...I taught a beginner's quilting class for children...my goal was that the kids "make their own quilt"...I had a basic pattern that was easily changeable and interpreted however they wanted to interpret it, and I was NOT hung up on the "technical skills", such as them mastering the traditional 1/4 inch seam allowance...I just wanted them to make their seam and get their pieces together and be able to say "I made this!" and be proud of themselves.

The owner of the shop, apparently did not agree so much. I thought she knew how I felt about it and all that. Next time, I'm going to be much more explicit, and I think, if it's ok with you, I'm going to use that quote as my mission statement...and on everything I possibly can!

Thanks for sharing that one...very timely for me!
